Sheldon shops

It seems that in this photo the shop and everything to the right of it was about to disappear.

Your right phil, the newsagents and off license were demolished to make way for a medical centre. The shop to the left (Johnson's) has been many things over the years, at the moment it is a specialist darts shop.

I remember coming home from Cubs at the hall next to Sheldon church in about 1957. It was winter and the pavements were icy. I was with my mate and I was pulling his sledge with him on it as I passed those shops on the corner of common lane and church lane, when my feet slipped beneath me. Down I went flat on my face. There was blood everywhere with a bloody nose, and a broken front tooth. I walked all the way home up common lane, into barrows lane and home at the newsagents in brays road. When older I had the front tooth capped which is still there to remind now 60 years later.
Happy days.

Oh crikey I forgot about the off license next door to fred evans the newsagent! Yes both gone now and a Drs surgery.
We used to be patients of Dr Jeavons and his wife for as long as I remember , even when I grew up and had my children. They were located along church rd just past St Giles church.
I think my mum eventually used the "new" Drs surgery when it opened and the Dr Jeavons's had gone.

When I left school I went to work at Hulls the ironmongers on the Radley', Roger worked at the butchers a few doors up.
One my jobs was burn the rubbish in the car park behind the shop, one day we were talking as I was throwing rubbish on the fire, when there was a almighty bang from the fire and scattered the rubbish everywhere , we both fell about laughing.
It seems there was an empty aerosol in the rubbish.
It's the sort of thing you do when you are young and stupid...

Oh yes we have all done daft things when we were young. I remember going with a gang of kids down the large drain that threads through sheldon country park in the 1960's and under the road to the other side of the coventry road! How lucky there wasn't a flash flood ! My parents would have "killed" me if they knew! We thought it was fun!

Wendylee, whereabouts was this? The only water course I can recall is Westley brook , I can't remember any large drains.

Hi James
Its where the brook goes under the Coventry rd near to where the Sheldon cinema was.

Of course I know it now. Located in an area we all called "The Baggies" when we were kids. Is that now part of Sheldon Country Park? I thought the Country Park was the old King George V playing fields, hence the confusion.

Hi jmadone, I have just spoken to my sister and it is a brook, not a drain and she said she used to go down there with her friends too! I always thought it was a storm water drain as a kid, I have never heard it called westly brook but havnt lived there for 35 years. Lots of the local kids explored it , it went under the coventry road.

Thats right they were called the baggies, wasn't much there when I was a small kid just a pond behind the territory army barracks in barrows lane , always remember there being wet areas and I think the concrete course that was built for what i now know is Westly Brook came later, I don't remember it when i was young. My dad would go blackberrying along the side of the brook.

I remember the area known by us kids as the baggies in the late 50s, why was it called that?
Went fishing in the pond to catch newts. Not legal now.
It was a great play area with the pond, lots of bushes and trees. Not manicured like it is now.

i also wondered why it was called the baggies elmdon boy as thats the nick name of the footie team i support but it cant be anything to do with that....maybe someone will know the answer

Yep i am hearing you, wish it had been left as it was for kids to explore.
My husband said that he heard that the land should never have been developed as the open unmanicured land was left by a titled Lady in her will to the people of sheldon, thats what my husband said he was told when he was young.
I remember the pond and also boggy areas over towards the coventry rd, there were also lovely wild flowers over there'd old houses with big gardens over towards horse shoes lane , we used to go scrumping behind those houses.

I had an uncle and aunt whose house was in Barrows Lane next door to the T.A. centre. When visiting from another part of Sheldon I would often play on the Baggies with my cousin and his friends. I remember the pond which as far as I can recall was always covered in duckweed so it looked bright green. Left to grow wild it was a great place for kids to play.
