Washwood Heath Road

Ian FOFB

Brummie yes ! Novice no !
Unfortunately the images from the first post on this thread have been lost.

The 'then' pictures are taken from old postcards, the 'now' pictures taken from Google Streetview.
The older of the pictures is thought to date from the 1920's.

Ian.

Washwood Heath Road, at the junction with Bamville Road. Sorry, no date for the first image but it was taken before the shop on the corner became a Co-op. Think there's a charabanc on the garage forecourt to the right in the first photo. The second photo is from the 1960s when the shop(s) to the left were Co-op shops.

Modern day view is attached below. Viv.

Very surprised to find many of the old buildings, shops and the church (St Marks) along Washwood Heath Road are still there today. Viv.

Great photo. In 1961 when I first married We lived in a flat right next to the bridge ,St Marks was the other side I remember the crockery trembled when the trains went by.
The shops were wonderful, the one I lived over sold lino and carpets,it was owned by the shop across the other side next to the police station (Ernie Lucas Hardware)

Been past there a thousand times and I never knew there was a police station there. Those lovely big houses a bit further up, before Leigh Road, must have been well to do in there time.

Most definitely. This house on the right is opposite Chetwynd Road. Lots of detail in the gables to make it clear to all around this was a cut above ! Viv.image.jpeg

Three photos from circa 1959. View of Membury Road (off Washwood Heath Road) from 14 Exton Way. Front garden of No. 14 (Jeff Leroux RHS, John Leroux next to him). Back garden of No. 14 (John Leroux RHS). These maisonettes are still there, they consist of 3 levels, we would enter at ground level then up the stairs to kitchen and living room, then up more stairs to bedrooms, balconies at front and back. It was luxury compared to the back to back house we lived in in Parliament Street.Garden at 14 Exton Way.jpg View from 14 Exton Way.jpg 14 Exton Way.jpg Garden at 14 Exton Way.jpg View from 14 Exton Way.jpg 14 Exton Way.jpg

Can anyone identify the bus/coach in the second picture?
Bob

I believe it to be a van, Bob. The sort bakeries used to make deliveries to shops.

Brummy Lad

Did you know that those maisonettes were built on the site of Bennetts Hill House, the home of Birmingham historian William Hutton. This image was taken a while after his death and I think shortly before it's demolition.

When I first saw it I thought the old West Bromwich ex London Transport Guy, because I thought it looked as if it had windows, but I think you and Phil are spot on and it is a delivery van and of course BR did have them in a two tone paint scheme for a while. I'll withdraw my question and slink away....stupid boy!!

Hi Phil, No, I didn't know that, amazing to think that a beautiful building was lost in the process. I have never seen a reference to this before, very interesting. Thanks, John

Quite a few photos in this thread;
Washwood Heath Road is mentioned in a large number of threads, I suppose because there were many important places on it.
