Air Raid 1941 Alum Rock

Hughes

master brummie
I have found a relative listed on Civilian deaths Ellen Gertrude Eeles died June 1941 she lived at 68 Pelham Rd Alum Rock
Was she killed at this address or was it else where?
I have looked at some sites listing air raids but Pelham Rd has been crossed out
regards
J Hughes

hi hughes her name is down as helen...her address was 68 pelham road but she died age 38 at no 70 along with 2 others so its possible that she was visiting them...her next of kin was her husband frank william Eeles..the address at the end are where people died..you may already know this but ellens name should be on the tree of life memorial for civilian deaths which is in the city centre...just looked in my birmingham blitz book written by the birmingham air raids association and helens name is listed in it along with every other civilian death

Many thanks for your reply.that clears up the question
They did not have much luck in Pelham Rd starting in 1940 then again in 41
I wonder if those houses were rebuilt
Cheers

Would have been the same raid that destroyed by nan & granddad's house (229 Cotterills Lane) but they were lucky. Two railway lines come together about there.

The discrepancy in house numbers could have had something to do with the sharing of air raid shelters, or just with neighbours huddling together for support when the siren went. I do remember the odd occasion when our family invited the lady next door, who was alone with a small baby whilst her husband was away in Malta with the R.A., to join us in our shelter.

My nan Lily mayo who married Sidney Charles Griffiths lived at number 30 pelham rd in 1924 my dad was born in 1933 trevor and Betty his sister 1931 in 1940 to 41

When war broke out 1940/41 my dad trevor was sent to bridgenorth from 30 pelham rd with his sister the Germans dropped bombs onto the railway line bottom of his garden missed the line and caught some of the houses . Not much damage house still stood and Mrs Powell and Bill lived at 32 they lived to tell the tale my dad returned back to the house and only minor damage I think most of the houses survived.
I was born at no. 30 in 1962.

Hi Hughes I was born on 31st October 1940 and lived at 111 Pelham road 112 was opposite and and we had an air raid shelter in the back garden. there were 2 houses that were flattened next door to each other. Being a tiny baby I was sick at the time and my mother stayed in the house and would not go down to the shelter as it was too cold and that took a direct hit. I had 2 much older sisters. When I was 5 or 6 we used to play on the bombed building, until they started rebuilding those houses a couple of years after the war was over.
