Nice pic of The Gun Barrells, Phil. Another hostelry in which I mis-spent a lot of my youth. I was in there one night during Rag Week and the students decided to drink the place dry, and succeeded.

Big Gee

I used to have the occasional drink at that other student watering hole the Bournbrook Hotel before they later changed the name to the Old Goose. What always amazed me was how full it was of students knocking back pints like mad and complaining how hard up they were.

Phil

I know, Phil. My first job was as a lab technician at Birmingham University in 1963. Our pay was lousy. All the students seemed to have more money for booze and birds than I did. Maybe in those days most undergrads came from well-off families.

Big Gee

I wonder if the Barrels or the Goose gets as full now with students as it used to? Now we are heading up the hill on Bristol Rd toward Selly Oak

I wish I had a £1 for the number of times that I walked under that bridge in Selly Oak, I would be at least QUARTER millionaire.

I had to get this on before it falls to pieces. From the front page of The Weekly Post & Midland Pictorial 17th May 1957.Handsworth,from the air.

I was there, in 1955, watching from my front garden. If I remember rightly, her coat was emerald green.

Continuing from my last post, we are now going further up the Bristol Rd into Selly Oak.

Now having passed through Selly Oak we continue on up Bristol Rd toward Northfield, whilst we are in the vicinity does anyone know why they demolished the footbridge by the College?

I remember than bridge being built, and I am sorry to hear it's gone now, No1 of #561, I used to meet my first real girlfriend on the corner, where the road goes towards Bornville, aged about 13 we then go to the Oak cinema. This is a great thread for me thanks for posting phil.

John

Demolishing the footbridge because it wasn't used sounds a bit excessive to me, surely there were loads of pedestrian underpasses in Birmingham that were unused but they didn't start filling them in until recently.

Paul,

What do you mean "real" were the previous ones only pretend?

John I thought it might be something like it was hit by an unusually tall vehicle, wasn't that the reason they demolished the one at the Meadway.

Phil no-one ever used it preferring to take their chances crossing the road, looking at the bridge I don't blame them.

I certainly agree with that!

I did a part time City and Guilds course at the college in the 80's and always crossed the road. There was no way you would have got me on that footbridge!! I do have a phobia about bridges in general but that sort of bridge particularly freaks me out!

As far as I know Phil, it was never hit by any vehicle.
I remember the Meadway bridge getting hit I drove past the same day.
