This is another narrow backstreet from the Gun Quarter - SHADWELL STREET, which contained the Bishop's Residence. Both ends featured.

Dennis although I recognise the one end with St Chads in view is the other end the cross roads with Loveday St to the left? Dek

What an interesting thread maybe we should start one on street names after reading recent posts I am amazed at where the names come from. Not what I first thought.

I agree totally Wendy. As you know, I have been worried that the original concept of featuring back alleys and passageways has long been exhausted (I think, but hope not of course), and I have been merrily plonking stuff on here for some time now that would probably, if I'm honest, be better described as Backstreets. I still find these fascinating to remember; look at; and occasionally learn from the names, stuff I never would have thought about or guessed if I hadn't read Carl's Books or Victor Price and Jo McKenna's volumes on Street names.

I think we maybe have several alternatives., viz.

1 Keep this Thread going but add Backstreets to the title (if this is technically and 'legally' possible).
2. Start a new Thread called Backstreets or something like that, and transfer Posts and pics that you and the mods think may be more appropriate for such a thread.
3. Do nothing and carry on regardless.
3. Ask the audience or phone a friend what they think is best?

I will go with the verdict of the mods and the people, and any comments would be welcome. I still have tons more to post....

You know I don't really have a clue dek lad. I do it on purpose to se if you are concentrating. I will have to look it up on the map now. Or someone will put me out of my misery (again)...Loveday Street deserves a mention anyway now you mention it!

And meanwhile here's one for you whilst you are lurking. LILY PLACE off Gem Street, Gosta Green. Look at that Mother lovingly washing the little boy with a bowl and towel, watched over by a real 'free range' hen! Marvellous. Out of poverty is always hope and inspiration...this one made me weep. Bless 'em.

hi dennis....i reckon its best to keep this thread as it is as surely in the course of time more info and pics are bound to come to light and as you suggested just start another thread for backstreets so keeping the two subjects seperate....

You may well be right mike. The caption just says Archbishops House in the book. The Road coming down from the top is Shadwell street, and I just got the house on the wrong corner! Must try harder?? Thanks again, you continue to be my guardian angel of the maps...

Dennis. Whatever happens this is a GREAT thread.

Bless you Gervan. From you that is a magic compliment to all who have made it with us so far. I'm just trying to emulate a fraction the Gosta Green thread and it's wealth of information and interest...if I can do that I will be happy. Here's to your 100,000th post! Cheers.

If I remember right we had some of the "Gosta"thread removed because it had become to big I stand corrected if I am wrong. I sometimes find it hard to think of the thread titles when using the search box with so many titles it becomes difficult to recall the item you want. Dek

I quite agree dek, know the feeling well. Some time ago the Thylacine diid a fandabadosey job in compiling an INDEX of named streets and the corresponding page and post number for this Thread. I could have kissed him but he was too far away and had been in the sun and up too many trees for comfort. Then when a few posts were removed, the index became unusable when most of the numbers changed as a result. Maybe a new thread like lyn suggests would be wise, if only to save yours and my memory overload switch...?

You can call it what you like Dennis...I'll still keep viewing! I think folk know what to expect when they click on this thread anyway - wonderful photos and informative text.
Grovelling over.

Thanks for the support lads and lasses. The Show goes on then...

Another nice shot of Lower Priory from a helicopter...scenes of my misspent youth. Ah - the Casino - just off to the left, like me too...

Yes I know this in Dale End, but in the first shot to the left of E.H.James (1906) there is an obvious to die for Alleyway with a sign I cannot read. Then in the shot after Hitler's lads had rearranged it (1918), and it was rebuilt, the alleyway is a much wider looking roadway whose name I still can't read....help me please...is the former one for the collection, or both perhaps?

And here IS a broader picture of Old Square with the Casino prominent. Watermark of providing website retained for copyright purposes.

The Lower Priory ahead View attachment 64864in your photo Dennis; is that where the Shalimar and the other Indian restaurant were situated in an earlier "alleyways" picture?

Dennis
E.H.James was next to Henn's Walk.

That's great mike, many thanks. So it was enlarged after the bombing? Not sure which side of Dale End to look on map...and thanks be to Mr Respectable for his lovely photo too. And in answer to your query Richie, yes, Lower Priory was home to the Shalimar posted by Phil earlier on this thread, but here is another from a different angle.

Hitler - 1918 ?? Just normal rebuilding I think. I agree the walk seems wider. Maps below for c 1905 and c 1927 seem to show this

Inspired by Villers Street in Post 459, that little truncated Street leading to HMP Winson Green, here are three more in a similar vein that folk may remember...

Waterworks Road, Bellis Street leading to Perrott's Folly.

OFF TOPIC again, Reported to postie. Sorry guys and girls there are rules and regulations in place for the sake of everyone, not least people who are interested in the history of our great City.
It is important i feel ( i may be wrong ) that information on our city can be found easily and without hinderence , posting on the correct threads will enable folks seeking knowledge to find it without the hinderence of sifting through a raft of C.....p Max

And here's a REALLY desirable residence with such a delightfully misleading name off Park Street NEW VALE COURT, where there were also some very much posher dwellings. I think I would rather go to Prison than spend my days here...
