St Marys School Wills Street

Hello Billyboy and welcome to the forum. I started a thread of that school and put two photo's on. I will go and search for it. Jean.

Edit. Unable to trace original thread.

My fathers class photo. He is in the 3rd row, on right standing in front of his teacher. I believe the school is called St Mary R.C and it is/was located near Hunters Rd, Hockley. My father was born 1914 so I estimate the photos date mid to late 1920's.

hi terry thats a cracking class photo..where abouts would your dad have lived when he attended st marys...

lyn

Hi Lyn, he would have lived in either Park Rd or Whitmore St. I remember him saying he hated it at that school. The reason he was a Roman Catholic was because his father died just before he was born otherwise he would have been christened C of E, but his mother remarried to a Roman Catholic.

hello

Hello there. There seems to be some confusion as to where the school was, St Marys convent school had a main entrance in Hunters Road. There was also an entrance in Brougham Street into the same school. There was a school in Wills Street on the same side as No 8 and between there and Villa Street. I think It was boys only. Mr Tommy O'Locklin ? was the head master when I was there. I knew it as the elementary school.
As my ,mother was a teacher at the convent school [1926 to 1963] I was a student there from1935 until 1941 when I moved to St Philip's next door to the Oratory near the Ivy Bush on Hagley Road.
Miss Kuck was also a teacher there, she came from Redditch where her family had business putting gold eyes into needles.Sister Margaret Mary was the head of the convent school for a long time Thank you for the memories.

thanks for the heads up carolina i must have a look at the list to see whats on...i have been inside st marys already...its a wonderful building inside and out and was even shown the small burial ground at the back where past nuns are buried..well worth a look around

Not sure if my mom went here - I know she walked down Wills Street to School and I presume it was this School she went to - no one to ask anymore, her name was Margaret Tyler and would have been there in the late 30s early 40s?

st marys was an infant and junior school but not far away was also anglesley st infants and juniors so your mom could have attended either..there was also lozells st infants and juniors and farm st infant and juniors all of which could have meant a walk down wills st to get to them..do you know where she lived or the names of her parents as i could check the electoral rolls for you for their exact address but even then we could not be certain which school she went to but it may give us the nearest school to their house

Thank you Lyn, very helpful information, parents were Nancy/Ann Tyler and Arthur Tyler, siblings were Winnie and Gerald, they lived in the following - Hunters Road, Grove Avenue? (possibly) Carpenters Road, not sure of what dates though or numbers, was so long ago, again, thank you for your help
