Gosh, will it be completely closed?!
I saw an article on the BBC website about the first baby being born at the new place in Smethwick a week or so ago and then some triplets so I thought it was just the maternity department.
 
Birmingham City Hospital on Dudley Road closed on Sunday November 10, 2024, after 135 years of service:

  • Closure date
    The final patient left the hospital at 7:03 PM.

  • Patient transfer
    The remaining 110 patients were moved to the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick by ambulance.

  • Farewell to a staff member
    Dr. Pankaj Kumar, a specialist A&E doctor at the hospital for 18 years, was the final patient to leave.

  • New use for the site
    The site will now be known as City Health Campus and will offer outpatient appointments, short stay surgery, and other services. The Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre will remain on site.
The hospital's condition had deteriorated due to water leaks and other issues, and it could no longer meet the demands of modern healthcare. The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital has a range of transport options, including public transport, parking, and cycle storage.

yes all the old parts will be demolished..
 
Seems a pity that they weren't able to close it and then do the necessary repairs, in order to be able to provide extra hospital places, and start to reduce the ever growing NHS waiting lists.

The Archway of Tears

The Archway of Tears at the City Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham
Birmingham Conservation Trust have secured funding to carry out an Options Appraisal on the Archway of Tears at the City Hospital on Dudley Road. This is the initial stage in a proposed larger project to restore the Archway of Tears – the entrance to the former Birmingham Union Workhouse.
The building was designed by J.J. Bateman and completed in 1852. It was here that people driven by poverty and circumstance arrived to be assessed for entry to the workhouse. Its evocative name reflects the sorrow suffered by new arrivals as families were split by gender and age to relevant living and working areas.
 
Finally got to take a few photos of Dudley Rd (aka City) Hospital yesterday. All from outside and taken over the tops of fences I'm afraid as my days of climbing into fenced off sites are long gone.....
Bulldozers were already ripping the end off A&E so if you want a last look go sooner rather than later!

great stuff mark...i went there last week hoping to get in and take pics of the inside especially the famous long corridor but to no avail....however i did know that 28 days later have some photos but unless i missed any i could not see any of the long corridor..my 4 children were all born there

Hi, can anyone point me in the right direction. A recently discovered lost relative was a nurse in this hospital during WW2 years. Delia Coleman (known as Fanny) Born in Westmeath, Ireland. Never heard from again. Where could I go to try and get nursing records or find out if she ws killed

Please note this thread is about the Workhouse located at Dudley Road/Western Road, opened in 1852. It later became a hospital.

There was an earlier workhouse located in the centre of Birmingham between Lichfield Street and Steelhouse Lane (around the position of Coleridge Passage) and built c1734. They are there Lyn under City Hospital - you have to hunt for them - for example:-

You will struggle to get on the site as demolition is now underway, so they can play the H&S card to keep you off!
 
Yes I feel rather sad , as that was the place where I came into this world . All those years ago , I've visited relatives etc many times . My mother RIP worked there many years ago as a cleaner and she told me when I was a young lad , that she remembered times when they brought leeches from the theatre. This was after they had been used in surgery and they were as bloated as anything with whatever they were removing from the patient .
