Hello!

I'm looking for info anyone has on any Fulfords living in Birmingham/Aston/Handsworth/Solihull from around 1800 to present day. My GGGGrandfather was Joseph Fulford b. 1812 in Birmingham. He was a from a brewing family of Fulfords. He ran the Minerva Brewery on Gt Hampton Row till around 1840ish and moved to Handsworth. He eventually moved to Manchester where he died around 1865. I believe there are family links with the Holt Brewery, run by Henry C Fulford which eventually was bought out by Ansells Brewery.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone!
Other Fulfords I'm interested in are Thomas and Fanny Fulford, who lived in Handsworth. Their children were John, Joseph and Mary. They were living at Fowler cottage, which is next to Warren farm in Handsworth abt. 1840. My GGGGrandfather Joseph and his family, were living at Warren farm by then, but I think Thomas and Fanny could be an Uncle and Aunt to Joseph.
Any further help would be great!!!  :smitten:
I seem to have hit a brick wall with them!

Cheers,

Tiger in the 13th cen. it was recorded that their was a Fulford Hall (Grove Farm ) just south east of Sarehole Mill ( I will send you the map)
Fulford comes from the name Foul Ford (1275)I can explain in detail
The Fulfords took their name from Fole Ford at Greet and in 1290 they were established at Forshaw in Solihull
Richard De Fulford was paying taxes of 40 shilling a year in 1275
The Fulfords were one of the families to have survived the Black Death and the Great Famine and grew stronger in the 15th cen.
Worth noting the deeds in 1360 to Yardley Parish (3 fields) was a grant from William Haukes of Yardley Coupere ? to Agnes Daughter of Henry Fulford
I think I wil stop here Tigerlily unless you want more
So you come from Good Stock

Cromwell,
where did you get the info from?  ???

I always thought there was a horrible chance my Fulfords were from Devon like the F-------- Fulfords that were on Channel 4 (did anyone see it?) I love Devon, I just didn't like those Fulfords!

Any more info is greatly appreciated  :smitten:

Thanks so much Cromwell  O0

Hi TIgerlily
Very excited to see your posting. I am Jane Fulford, Joseph was also myGGGgrandfather and I too am in search of our heritage. What did you discover and did you submit a family tree.
I guess I'm at the stage you were several years ago and I could use any help you or any of the other interested parties may be able to offer. What interesting helpful comments they made to you previously.
I think there is a link with Henry Fulford. what did you discover.
I live in Oz at the mo but would love to chat with you more, especially now we have discovered we are distant relatives.
I come back to the uk each summer
I very much look forward to hearing from you

thanks so much
Jane Fulford

What a shame OC had a wealth of info to share. Is there any way of finding out whether he posted more info on the Fulford Brewers
many thanks
Jane Fulford

Thanks for replying. What a shame OC is not part of the forum anymore. He had a wealth of info to share. is it possible that he posted more info on the Fulford brewers
many thanks
Jane Fulford

I'm sorry Jane a search of the forum has shown no other information with regards to Fulfords Brewers.
OC(Cromwell )is no longer a member and neither is Tigerlily and so cannot be reached via this forum.

I am very interested in this thread - my daughter married a Fulford, whose father came from Birmingham, however the grandfather Fulford was born in Ireland - did any of the Fulford family emigrate to Ireland do you know? It does not seem to be an Irish name, there are a huge number of Fulfords (or were) in Devon.

Jane a little more info about your Fulford family

Joseph born 1812/13 had a son William Henry born , 1845 Birmingham who became a Brewer

Graces business directory has.William Henry Fulford.
1876 Beer retailer and brewer 7&9 Park St. Manchester

1883 Adresses Monarch brewery, Regent Road, Salford
Old Nags Head, Deansgate
8 Enscombe Place, Salford

1895 Brewer of the Empress Brewery and of 855 Chester Road, Stretford, Manchester.

In 1895 the partnership between W H Fulford, John Heap and J Wainwright known as W H Fulford and Co, (Empress Brewery) was dissolved.

I am presuming that the Empress Brewery continued without William as he brought a libel action against the Brewery in 1901.

Thanks for getting back to me. Let me know the name of the fulford she married and age of your daughter. No I have not found an Irish connection. All brums so far. My Fulford heritage stems from the fulfords of the north, although the fulfords of Devon are very much alive and kicking and well to do.
I look forward to hearing from you
Jane FULFORD

Thanks so much Alberta... On both counts
Yes I knew re William Henry. My Ggrandfather is his younger brother Sam. The bit where I'm stuck is before Joseph 1913 and the connection with Henry Fulford Holt Brewers. Joseph had his Minerva Brewery on the same street. Henry Charles the holt brewery later that century. A great posting in the great Hampton row thread shows the map of the area and the malt house centrally placed. I wonder if anyone has any more info on that. Anyway thanks again

Hi Jane

The man I am looking for is one step back than I initially stated - he was William John Fulford who died around 1913. He married Mary Ann O'Hara (formerly Flanagan) in 1899. I have him on the 1901 census aged 38 saying he was born in Athlone. (I had considered that he was the son of a Fulford who went to live in Ireland)

William and Mary had a son, William born 1907 (but cannot find a registration for him) and he died in 1972. His son was Patrick William (died 2004) , and then his son was Tony (not Anthony) who is my son in law. My daughter was Jane Roberts, now Jane Fulford (yes, this is true, I am not joking!), and they married in 1999. Jane was born in May 1970.

I am just clutching at straws here, I know, but Fulford is not an Irish name, and there were many living in Birmingham around the area of Summer Lane, where Patrick William Fulford was born.

If we can find out who was William's father, I would be delighted!

Hi Shortie
Your daughter and I share the same name. I'm a bit stuck myself and can't go back another gen yet but lets stay in touch and you never know
Best wishes
Jane Fulford

Hi Jane

I am about to re-subscribe to Ancestry Worldwide, so I shall hopefully be able to find out when my William Fulford came to England. Sometimes the Irish took on an Anglicised name, as they were often treated badly (racism is nothing new), so he might have just adopted the Fulford name. I am only half-interested in this because it's not my own family, so there is no rush, but I will let you know if I find anything. It does seem funny 'speaking' to someone called Jane Fulford, I have to admit!!!

Cheers

Shortie

Hi Jane, I have a family Bible, on researching my ancestry, it seems that William Henry Fulford re Empress Brewery, Manchester was my x4 Great Grandfather, his daughter was Lucy Ellen Fulford, who married Richard Walter Beaumont, after his death married Adam Hyslop. If anyone could verify any of this information or add too, I would be most grateful. Regards. Sachka
