iam alspo looking forewarded to thse pics it comes to my mind at this moment is thegun makers arms on lichfield rd just along from thompsons the butchers and ofcourse the ladies old fashioned shop goldbergs where the out door was where we used to uy in a dark brown bottle of good old tradional ginger beer
and the reason is i have mentioned is i have another bottle of old ginger beer in frnt of me now ithis minute
my wife bought it for me yesterday much to my surprize ; in a dark brown bottle but its a plastic bottle
and its called OLD JAMAICA GINGER BEER ; and in small print it sayswith fiery jamaican roast ginger;
and beLleive me it.s lethal ; it blows your socks off it tastes will burn the back of your throat if you aint used to such good ginger beer orininal
fntastic; i love it ; just like i love your articles on the old pubs i have got alot of the pub memorable but i do not want o publishize
i have old ledgers going back to the early ages where thelicences would have to pull out and record there finding on he old tradional methords
when beers was a penny a pint ; i could give them to the museum but i have chose not tto do that when i die i will hand them over tomy sons and grand children as part of my history handed to me by my ancestors from early 1900s
lynn i am looking foreward to seeing the pics have a great day lynn and keep the forum going as you do ; best wishes alan ; astonian

Do they still call them outdoors up there in Brum? In fact do pubs still have outdoors? I remember you could take a bottle round to your local outdoor and get it filled with sherry and, I think wine, straight from the barrel. That was the plus side. The downside was it was more gut rotting than tasty! But it was cheap. :D Viv.

hi viv...i think you would be pushed to find an outdoor open that is part of a pub these days...i can recall me..me brother and a couple of mates getting a bunk up over the back wall of the the vine inn..passing a few empties over and then taking them round to the outdoor of the pub for the money back...the gaffer said he knew we were doing it but could never catch us:D:D happy days..going to start putting a few pics on in a min...

hi viv ;
i do not know about the rest of the population ;
but i am old fashioned and i still call it an out door; does any body else ;
come on you boozers ; lets hear from you and put viv; in the picture i have got my ginger beer still in front of me
whilst the misses is out ; talk about gut rot; his is really lethal just likethe old days its got a real kick in it
the one we got from the gun barrells on lichfield rd in the fortys and fiftys we soon stopped going to dear old mr whettons sweet shop
for his soda water pop he used to pull from a pump mind you i likedis ice cream soda until masons introduced the
fizzy american ice cream soda but now i am drinking the jamican honey roast ginger with a kick burns the back of your throat
when way back we thought the gun barrells ginger was hot this is even hotter ; grr;
chers me dears; alan astonian

hope that some of these are new to the forum folks..the writing on the back of them is not always easy to read so apologies in advance if i get it wrong and please feel free to correct me...:)

Aaaaahhh forgot about that Lyn ...... returning the empties and being paid for your effort ( regardless of where the bottles came from :rolleyes:). We were the original recyclers! ;)

Hi Astonian. Your Ginger Beer sounds delicious. I love the stuff and yours with the extra kick must be good stuff. I recently tried the alcoholic Ginger beer that's appeared in the shops, but it's not my cup of tea. Stick with the old stuff, by far the best. :)

I used the Church Tavern and The Prince of Wales a few times when I worked at Foseco. Both a bit rough, if I'm honest. The petrol prices in the Church Tavern photo make interesting viewing - mid-1980's at a guess?

I also had a drinkie a couple of times in The Observatory in Hunters Road, because my mate lived round the corner. Quite liked that pub.

Keep 'em coming, Lyn!
