ESSO BLUE PARAFFIN.

My Mother used to send me down to Mr. Tallis's ironmongers in Tame Road Witton for a gallon of Esso Blue in one of those boxy cans. He had a 50 gallon drum of the stuff behind the counter !! and filled the can while he was smoking his pipe !! Can you imagine it !! I think it was 2/6d for the gallon.
Do you recall the cartoon advert for "The Esso Blee Dooler" ?


On a different tack, how about the Renault Dauphine, rear engine I think. The TV advert ran "A penny farthing a mile and she travels in style"
 
Golden Eye Ointment for styes and, possibly, eye infections. Used to put it on at night then wake up with your eyes glued shut! :rolleyes:Viv
 
I had a Ewbank Sweeper when I first got married in 1957. The thing I remember most vividly about it was one day when I was using it I saw a mouse under the TV and was almost hysterical, however with presence of mind I shoved the Ewbank at it and a piece of loose skirting board fell on the mouse and trapped it, I sent my young son to a neighbour who took over while I ran outside and he got rid of the mouse.
 
As youngsters, we always loved the small bottles of Orange drink that we got from the milkman. The bottles were the same size as those used for the school milk at Junior school (1/3 Pint)
 
I remember my Mom having a bottle of Cascara tablets!!
Is Kest still around ? ....recommended by Midwives 25 years ago, ..a great reliever !!
 
:)Mike I have some different ones on this computer but can only access them through Internet Explorer and it is so slow. I saw ichmacol in the chemist the other day I think it replace the old Black Jack?:). Jean.
 
Cadburys chocolate bars there were six squares in a block and flavours were peppermint,strawberry,coffee,and caramel,does anyone else remember them,also going right back now to when sweets came off ration Lyons slam bar.
 
I remember the Cadbury's selection bar very well Jemima, could only afford it occasionally as a child because it wasn't in the cheaper range of sweet's. Also Carolina, we used to play housey housey with bit's of paper, and when we had covered all the number's we used to shout 'house'. There was alway's a small jar of Cascara's in our medical box, together with pink lint (for drawing boil's etc), and a round jar of pink, sticky Germolene, which had a powerful smell. I tried a Cascara once, and wished I hadn't!!!
 
Maggs it was a Horse Racing Game manufactured by Chad Valley, England. You had to keep turning a handle to make the horses go.

Mom used to buy a cough medicine called Glenpec it was red and tasted lovely and also Topsy's junior Aspirin tasted of raspberry's all from a shop up the rd that sold everything like the one in Open all hours, his name was Brain and how strange I live next door to one of his relations.
 
Funny you mentioned slush puppy iced drinks Alberta only they are making a come back at a pub in Arley. There is a blue bubble gum flavor that I don't remember from the past only the awful pain that shot up into you head when you swallowed it.
 
No Carolina, I never had that one. The only Chad Valley toy I remember having was a tiny sewing machine. Did Chad Valley have their factory somewhere in the Edgbaston area?
 
Thanks for the info Carolina. I do remember my step mother buying the bagatelle for my little boy. I loved the little sewing machine I had, and I was able to make all sort's of things with it. It did a sort of chain stitch. I repaired sheet's, made chair cover's, and had many happy hour's with it.
 
What about packs of 5 Park Drive cigarettes and there are hundreds of old names that have long since gone. This reply might not reach high on the health agenda but never the less they were our favourites. No. 6, Woodbine, Senior Service, Pall Mall, Camel, Players and lots more,
 
I well remember taking 20 Senior Service with me when I went off to start Basic Training, they lasted me 3 weeks, we never got much time for smoking, any time not rushing about, we spent either eating or sleeping. Happy days.
 
l wonder if anyone remembers the wooden clogs of the 40's.....l always wanted a pair but my mom said no, stating they did'nt give your feet any exercise... where that came from l don'nt know....used to love the sound they made as people walked down the street.....Brenda
