Thanks for this, I will check that census out and take a look. Is it the one with William on it? I do find it strange there being no records of sabina other than marriage. Eliza also seems to feature a lot in their lives, perhaps as you say because she was living with them? I find it strange...

Thanks. I did have this but hadn't realised the address until you pointed this out. I dont think Thomas and Eliza married as I havent yet found a marriage record for them and I noted on here how she is down as Morton and Thomas died 1892. On the documents you found = admission...

Thanks Lynn, thats quite condemning of both parents. I find it strange that if Sabina went to prison why there doesn't appear at present any records of that. And to describe them as Vagrants, really harsh considering these were two vulnerable kids. Is it possible do you think that with...

The school was funded largely by subscriptions and donations, along with the board and lodging payments for asylum residents, and the income from the children’s labour. In 1858 the school began to take in a large number of children of soldiers killed during the Crimean War, who were paid for by...

Thanks for that @MWS I was trying to decipher the names and the explanation helps. I didn't know who Ambrose Biggs was and was actually googling when you posted but google didn't come up with much for me. It is confusing that Matilda in particular is listed on the 1871 census at Gem Street but...

@Astoness if you have the transcription for both copies that would be great unless anyone knows how to improve picture quality above with sharper writing etc?? And just want to say thank you for this, its much appreciated. It is very sad. I wonder if Matilda was admitted twice?

Matilda would have been 6 not 7 at the time of admission as her birthday was 20th Feb 1867 so there is a year discrepancy on the record. Also Im confused as it says Matilda was admitted 1873 but shes there at Gem Street in 1871? Is Matilda's entry possible transfer date to Walter Lesters...

@Astoness also sorry....where it says about being detained the date is different to the admission date for Gem Street. The name Ambrose Biggist? and George someone appears in the same column...any idea who these two people are?

@Astoness so Gem Street was for up to 16yr olds Im reading between the lines if a child is admitted aged 7 or 9 and then detained for 7 years etc tho Matilda obviously was transferred to Lancashire to the Walter Major Lesters home for children....was this common place to transfer the children...

    Matilda Mayes

@Astoness So I was right to suspect that Eliza Mayes was Matilda's sister even tho the transcribed record said Moyes not Mayes though the original census did say Mayes. I think I can read Matilda's entry clearer. Struggling to read Eliza's but from what I have deciphered so far, Thomas Mayes...

Thanks for the above records which I will take a look at. Sorry I've not been on lately so missed you posting this until now. Yes I thought the 1881 census was Matilda. Did you find anything out about the inquest or sabina and thanks Lynn so much. Will see if I can read the above posts. xxx

The death record forncett st marys is not James. There is an 1871 for James Mayes from that area though it says forncett, st peter, london when forncett st peter is south norfolk. But that james is unmarried. I think it rules out the death record above for our james this is the 1881 census I...
