When doing restoration work like this, do bear in mind that whatever you do to it, you cannot undo it.

Have a think about why you want to clean your headstones first. Is it to make them more legible, so that you can gather information that you cannot see now. Or do you just want to make them look new.

If you want to make them look new, bear in mind that you’re in a cemetery setting with headstones that date back to the beginning of the nineteenth century. The appeal of these places is that they have acquired over the years a look that gives us a sense of the past. Cemeteries have a strong sense of time and place that has built up over the years in layers of history.

These layers and sense of time and place along with the symbolism can often tell a story of the deceased for more powerful than the inscription alone.

Headstones are erected, some at great expense as a lasting monument to the lives of the dead in perpetuity. Quite often it is the only visible sign of their life that tells their story to the future generations. So, it is important to ensure that their story continues to be told to others who may come after you.

Indeed, surely lichens and moss have a place on long-standing headstones.
