The Flower Ladies of Birmingham

Di.Poppitt

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
They are worth a mention, they stood along the streets in Birmingham with their baskets brimfull of flowers. As a youngster I used to try to stand by them to catch their heady scent. I decided that when I married I wanted to carry floweres from one of those baskets. One of the ladies lived in Aston in a little alley off Witton Road, (it was Witton to the right and Aston to the left). I wish I could reemember her name, she made a wonderful job of Violets for my bridesmaids and Freezias for me. I can still rmember walking from home up Witton Road early on my wedding day, meetimg one of my bridesmaids off the bus at Trinity Road and going to collect the bouquets.
