Pensionable Service in the services

The indexing of Chelsea Pensioner service records on Findmypast has allowed me to find the records of some of my family who were in the army. I'm trying to work their service dates back to find/confirm their date of Birth but have hit a snag - some service shows as being "Under Age" and some I suspect have changed their age.

The question is what age could one legally join the services and from what age was it counted as pensionable service (I assume the age is the same) - is it 16, 18, 21 or something else? Any guidance gratefully appreciated.
