  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

KENT STREET BATHS

Hi

Yes I was in the sea at Le Touquet then suddenly there was no
bottom within a few seconds I was floating then a few simple
strokes and I was swimming around. It was fantastic.
Never got on with Baths as I have said before.
I was pointing towards the White Cliffs of Dover but saw no
Blue Birds.

Mike you missed so much fun not learning at your local baths but you got there in the end. Funny our Alf was on about blue birds the other day on another thread????. Trouble is the water is very warm in the baths and therefore less dense. Bye. Jean.
 
My Grandmother, Rita Gibbons, worked at Kent St in the late 50's (she also worked at Woodcock St later on) but she particularly liked Kent St. We used to go to the Christmas parties every year - she always used to send Christmas gifts to 2 of the lady supervisors, but I cannot remember their names. She also worked in the Cafe upstairs.
 
hi,all..here is a foto of kent st baths, afew years ago,..one of the best baths, around..we all went 24/7..to the baths. kent st..my grannys, best friend worked on the front office..[molly may]..happy days,...regards..christy..
 
Christy just looking at that lovely photo makes my eyes smart. Just the thought of the clorine in the water and when we were training we didn't have goggles in those days and Bert Owens our coach made us work hard. He was a fantastic coach. Jean.
 
hi,the area where the baths stood..there was 2,large swimming baths..all the land is now a huge car park..very sad..would lov to see any film footage of the baths ..& photos..or any pics,outside..of the streets outside. the baths..regards..christy
 
hello..elvis..i remember the turkish baths well..we all went in there for the hot choc,from the machine..we went to Kent st 24/7.. along from the baths, by the British Oak pub..was an Alley way, that sold tea & cakes..it was run by an old lady..did you remember this or have any photos..elvis have you any photos of Kent st baths..my grannys, friend was molly may.. all the best..christy..
 
Some of the images in this thread showing the building prior to recent demolition have been lost. The one surviving shows an impressive facade. Could anyone tell me please whether this was a post-war structure.

I'm interested in this because I have always assumed that the prewar building was totally destroyed in the blitz. This was my interpretation of an image which I published in this web page: https://www.staffshomeguard.co.uk/DotherReminiscences60ABhamFightingSchool.htm. Please see the panoramic picture towards the bottom of the page. I'd really like to know whether the stated orientation of the view (achieved with a lot of sweat!) is open to any doubt.

dont remember the alleyway christy but after a long day working in the turkish baths we used to go to the pub on the corner of wrentham st to fill up lol
 
what a great pic colin brings back my working day memories a lot of famous people used to use the turkish baths

Ohh Sunday mornings 1955/6/7 we were off around 8.00am from Yardley with the Powers. Bernie ran the Cafe near the Blues Garrison Lane.
We arrived at Kent Street Baths. Fantastic swimming. Soon in their Face afterwards. Happy Days
 
Fab set of images there Antoness, I did some work dropping of work here to be repaired, I had no idea who the repair paint shop were ...if there is anyone out there who my k ow plz give us a shout..see if there are more photos out there..
 
glad you like them christy....i think the old photos are a very important part of history because once these old buildings are gone they are gone....photos are all we have left and of course our memories

It's not often you get to see photos of Turkish bath interiors, but here's the lounge of the Kent Street Turkish Bath. Bet the Turkish bath interior was something to be seen. Think I see a set of weighing scales next to the pillar. A rather personal photo really. Sorry no date. Viv.

Has anyone any information of a Gill family that ran a milk round and shop from at least 1861 upto 1930s possibly longer. They lived at 86 Kent Street Birmingham, a Mrs Charlotte Gill appears to have run it all, with son or step son Edwin Gill taking over. Edwin and his wife are shown to own the milk road in 1930.
