Hey Shelia..... I had to go there way back when we had the Electricity Stikes... we were put on a three day week, so I was trying to get my money made up... If I recall I came out of there a little dissapointed...

I worked at the Day Nursery from 1971 to 73, hard work but rewarding, at that time you had Matrons running them they were not to be messed with!

Hi Sheila
My wife worked at Handsworth dss office for many years including the 70s.
Her name was Hilary Wallis, did you know her ?.

I worked there around the early 1970s but only for a few months. If I remember correctly, the 'modern' offices on Soho Road were above a garage (?). It was almost opposite the Unemployment Benefit Office/Labour Exchange. I worked on interviewing claimants and it was probably one of the most depressing jobs I've ever had. Although the people I worked with were great. It seemed you just had to have a keen sense of humour to survive. And if that wasn't enough, I worked at the Bradford Street DHSS, another pretty gloomy job. But at least you could go out into town in relative safety.

Viv.

my aunt also worked at soho road DHSS not confident to put a date when but her name was joan howard

Not a name I remember Lyn, although she may have been there when I was there. Viv.

have a feeling it was before you viv as i can only remember her working at tubes rocky lane
