Greaves, Ruth & George

MWS

from Bham
Certainly one (Ruth) and possibly both distant relatives.

Marriage reg. Solihull 1896 but possibly was at Christ Church, Burntwood. Then it looks like they divorced in 1907, interesting in itself.

George may have been a soldier (possibly Boer War) and then possibly emigrated to US on the Baltic in 1907. If it was him then he wasn't particularly truthful on his naturalization.

Ruth later possibly marries another (or the maybe same) George Greaves in 1923.

So, could some look at the marriage record on Ancestry to see if the names of their respective fathers are listed please. Divorce is on Ancestry as well but there's usually too many pages.

Also, there appear to be a number of mentions of the divorce in 1907 newspapers on findmypast (Bham Daily Gazetter, 31 Jul and Bromsgrove & Droitwich Messenger, 3 Aug & 26 Oct). If someone could see if there's anything interesting, that would also be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Firstly the divorce record for George and Ruth Greaves gives

Unfortunately the marriage record for St John's Sparkhill does not seem to be on Ancestry. Reason Adultery and possible cruelty.

If you think this is the rght person I will look further into the divorce record but as you say a lot of pages.
Had a quick look but only Solihull records seem to be St Alphege (parish church) - couldn't see them but will look in more detail later. Quite a number of areas come under Solihull.

Thanks, it is the right person but don't worry about looking any further.

There does appear to a marriage record for them under Staffs Marriages (Burntwood), not sure why (banns maybe?)

The Bromsgrove paper is more or less the same as the Gazette above, except that an attendant at Holymoor spoke of his misconduct.

It seems that in July His Lordship was not satisfied with the evidence as to the identification of the respondent and adjourned the case sine die for further evidence. However in October Ruth was granted a decree nisi with costs.

The record (I can only see a transcript) is for Banns - fitting with his residence at Burntwood.

Thanks for all that.

That does seem to confirm that he emigrated because he lists himself as a nurse on the naturalization.
The divorce record shows he went to S Africa in Dec 1901 returning in July 1904. Also names 2 now dead children.
The marriage cert is also included. This gives George's occupation as coachman, his father George (deceased) her father Joseph (coal merchant). witnesses Joseph and Fanny Greaves.

Thank you, that's super. I had the children but his father's name confirms that he was also a distant relative and that he and Ruth were cousins.

I can merge the 2 George Greaves now.
