Carlby may actually be Kersey. The only Carlby I can see is in Lincolnshire.

Two of their children list their birthplace as Kersey on later censuses and another lists something that could be read as Kersey (Caisey).

Also Kersey is only a couple of kilometres away from Newton, where James and Mary were married.
