In the early years of the police force being formed they had problems with men;
they had a permenmentrecruitment problem, pay was poor and many men hacked the job for only afew months before resigning
not only wee they dischanted with the financial rewards; they ran the risked of being attacked [ daily ] and spat upon --and that before they went on the beat .
intrnal disap[line was extremely harsh, offciers was fined and fired for the trival misdemeanoursthe following are typical from the 1800 and 60;s
Standing in a slovenly manner.beforethe chief superintendant;
Sitting down in the brew house
siting upon a door step
sitting down in a shutter box ;
parading at the public office yard with out new uniform trousers
being in a brothel for five minutes when on duty and concealing himself from ps gibbons ;
losing a cape and taking another officiers and not is own
In 1875 R C WILLIAM LINES became the second policeman to be klled on duty in birmingham ,
Arresting officiers were set upon by drunken gangs ; determined to release they mates. lines was stabbed in the carotid artery
his killer Jermiah corkery was hanged and five accomplices sentenced to life inprisoment
william lines died 24 th march 1875 when duty called him ; no fear appalled him ;
