Church Road, Yardley.

According to mother-in-law, the "pavement" is actually a public highway so it might be difficult to get permission for tables outside. Apparently some of the shops started putting advertising boards out (you know the free-standing, two sided ones) then had to remove them as they were actually on the highway!

We'll have to wait and see but I know that if the residents of Newcroft Grove have anything to do with it, Wethspoons wont stand a chance!

dwilly ,thanks for showing this.I have enjoyed a trip down memory lane! The swan picture showing Harriss outfitters where mom used to take us,the Hardings cart taken in Rowlands rd or Manor House Lane judging by the house style, and the tivoli and Sheldon cinemas which were a big part of my life.My mother worked at the Journeys End and Good companions and The Bull, and my wedding reception was held at the old Swan pub in 1958. I can also remember H.G turners shops at the Wheatsheaf and Small Heath. As for Grimleys sweetshop ,it was well used by us children from Church rd School ! One of my school friends lived in one of the rebuilt houses which replaced the bombed ones in Lily Rd. Margaret.

That's a great photo. I was there last week visiting Mother in Law.

I did post this query on another thread but think this is probably a better place to ask:

Does anyone remember what was on the corner of Church Road and Blakemere Avenue before the Laundry?

Hello,Please does any one know of a shop called " Kirkdale" in yardley by the coventry rd back in the early 1920's .MyG. grandfather James Jenks lived there with his family, I believe he was a picture frame maker

Hi sue, regards shops using the frontage to display items or advertising boards on church road. Woodruffs the pet shop has sold plants out side for years. And ive noticed recently that one or two other shops are also piling things up outside. I bet Weatherspoons are watching the situation with interest. It wouldnt be very nice for the people living above the pub.

I lived at 46 Croft Rd from 1971 to 1978 the house was opposite Wroxton Rd my sons went to Church Rd school then Cockshut Hill. We always bought our wallpaper from Ray's we knew him when he had a shop in Alum Rock.

Gilbertstone House was demolished in 1937 I believe, and was located where Saxondale Avenue, Yardley stands today. Previously Gilberstone was a district itself.

Went to Sunday school in the top of that building next to the church in the late 40s early 50s John Crump OldBrit. Parker, Colorado USA

Re:Shop,Church Road, Yardley.
I have just found this post and am reminded of my youth. I grew up in Patrick Rd from 1935 and everyone has spoken about all the people I knew around that area. There a few names which I know but cannot put a face to them plus the fact most are using pseudonyms. I always thought the people who lived at the house on the corner of Croft Rd and Church were the Lewis's, the lad went to Church Rd school with us. The house was sold off with the understanding that it would be kept in it's original form and that is why the shops were built on the front of it, it was an eerie place to walk past on a dark winters night as a 10 year old.
The people from Wroxton Road went to church Rd school as we all did in that area, John Hately lived towards the church Rd end and David Barrows the other end, Malcolm Bastock of the funeral Directors lived in Croft Rd along with many more.

Hello Eddie 14,

I lived with my husband and sons at 46 Croft Rd I was friends with Malcolm and Pauline Bastock and their son Mark was friends with my son Nigel, I am still in contact with Mark, Malcolm died a few years ago and Pauline remarried.

Hi Trebor, I don't know how long you have lived there but no 18 Vera Rd is at the end of your back garden and many years ago your bathroom window had a stone go through it, about 68 years back. As kids we got up to all sorts of things and just before Bonfire night we had bangers, which could be bought over the counter in those days,we used to put a piece of tube in the ground at an angle, light the Blue paper drop it into the tube then quickly drop in some mud which usually had stones in it. This one day the tube fell over and pointed at your house from the bottom of no 18 Vera and there was an almighty bang and you window shattered. My friend is on the forum and if he sets eyes on this story my life will not be worth living. he did pay for the repair though.

Was that by Billy Hadens hair dressers shop Also a sweets shop on the corner
Mother in Law's (Margaret Dawkins) father used to own the newsagent's at 212 Church Road. They also had the house on the corner of Church Road and Blakemere. I know the laundrette you mean, no they didn't own that but a member of the family worked there for years.

We bought 3 Wroxton Road in 1977 for £6000.00. It hadn't had anything done, although it had electricity, the original gas mantles where still there. Birmingham Council used to give a grant in the 70's for "repairs and renovations", so we were fortunate to be able to get new windows and a new roof. The dining room floor was quarry tiles but they all had to go and (a condition of the grant) a concrete floor laid. No central heating though, just an open fire in the "parlour"!

John, I think Hadens was up near the Swan in Church Rd opposite Hardings bakery, the one in Church Rd Near Wroxton Rd was the Welsh guy Mr Vaughn

Trebor, Opposite your house on the corner of Wroxton Rd, Right hand side, you will see the house has been bricked up, that was a shop in the Forties and the name was on the angled wall for many a year, but I see it has been painted over the last time I went past, for the life of me i cannot remember the name. Also the house on the corner of Patrick Rd right hand corner was a shop way back to the 1930's but as the Yewtree developed they went out of business.

Dave

Trebor, would I know you, I left Patrick Rd in 1959 but I knew all the school kids in Croft Rd as I said before we all went to Church Rd school.
Dave

Mah, I thought that Harris's was further towards the city side of the Coventry Rd as my Mother's friend used to work in there. From the corner of church Rd was the chemists and further along was the Sadlers then Hemmings the the shops dropped back and there were only one or two of them, I could be wrong but see what others say.
Dave

Trebor, I have just found your post where you state that you were only in croft Rd for a few years so I would not know you as you only lived there from 1971.
Dave

suemailings, that name rings a bell from Wroxton Rd because David Ward lived in that area many moons ago, I remember Mrs Ward but not a Mr Ward am I right. If you are the same age as myself you would know Mary Lannon and her Brother, Nicky.

We lived in Croft Road for about seven years, while we were there the shop was still there on the corner of Wroxton Rd
