Football Team Photo - Main Site.

I have just been looking at the updates on the main site, really enjoyed the photos and stories, great to have it back.
I can name all but two of the boys on the photo, all contemporaries of mine.

Teacher Mr. Barker.
Back row - left to right Peter Jones, ??? Brian Kingett, Roy Atkins, Kenny Lolly, John Johnson, ???
Front row - Dennis Knight, John Tustin, Norman Townsend, Leonard Salisbury, Teddy Ferris.

Not sure of when it was taken, they only look about 8 years old so I would guess about 1946/47.

John Tustin,
there was an 'Anita Tustin' in my class, between '64 and '69.
Maybe he was her father...
I mention it because it's such an unusual name.

Maz, Anita was the daughter of John Tustin, they lived in Parliament Street, about 5 doors up from Stirks Aviary, later John and his wife moved to a house in Burlington Street, the bay window was in Copeley Street, and the front door in Burlington Street.

Hello Alf,

It's ages since I've been on the site and I was just exploring it when I came across your post about Mr Jones.

You're absolutely correct, he was the Deputy Head and a really good teacher. I did a teaching practice there in 1968/69 and was lucky enough to be given his class. I really enjoyed my time there and it was only when I was half way through that I discovered that his son 'Jonah' had been in the same year as me at grammar school.

Mr Jones was really inerested in the kids he taught and set a good example for any aspiring teachers like me, mind you I wasn't as impressed with the head who seemed to spend most of his time looking miserable and ruling witha rod of iron; even to the point where we students were sent out of the staffroom because one of our number dared to sit in an armchair without asking permission.

Mr Jones conned me into being Father Christmas for the Infants, which was an experience, especially when a couple of them decided that sitting on Santa's lap happened to coincide with their need to go to the toilet.

But many happy memories of Mr Jones and of my time at Burlington.

Best wishes, hope that you're still keeping well in the wilds of Suffolk.
Maz question. Do you or any other good people remember a teacher by the name of Mr Jones at Burlington St I think he was Deputy Head , he had been my Teacher at Cowper Street and I went to see him at Burlington about 1960 O0

I'm sure I saw him on a School photo Burlington site ^-^

Does anyone remember a Miss James of Burlington Street, you had to go through her classroom to get to Mr.Burgess office and down some steps. Also Mr.George who used to take us for PE he was lovely.

Ditone, yes I do remember Miss James, she was something of a tyrant, one of the girls in our class June Holmes misbehaved and Miss James tied her to the easel. Can you imagine the furore there would be these days?

Sylvia I think she did have a temper but for some unknown reason I got on well with her, probably cos I was small like her!!

Can you tell me how to get prints off the pics I managed some and now I don't seem to be able to without getting all the print of the history forum on don't know what I am doing different there are some great ones I want of Newtown Row.

Ditone, glad you got on well with Miss James, you are probably the only one who did. Sorry I can't help about the pics, I think there is a thread on computer advice, if you post there, one of the "experts" will help you.

Re: Burlington St Junior & Infants School & Senior Girls

Any old girls from Burlington Street Senior Girls, who remember all the house names?

I can only remember three - Florence Nightingale - Elizabeth Fry - Edith Cavell. Racked my brains for the fourth - any help?

Sylvia, like you l remember the houses....trying to rack my brains for the 4th name ...but do remember the colours...red,blue,yellow and green, l'll sleep on it maybe things will be clearer in the morning..Brenda

Like you and Brenda can only remember the three and the colours, I wonder why, I was in red Florence Nightingale. Will get back if I remember.

Hi,
I went to Burlington Street Seniors left in 1964,you have been on about
the houses,Nightingale,Fry,Cavell,i am sure the other one was Scott and it was Yellow.I was in this house.
Regards
Carol

Carol thanks for posting but Scott doesn't ring a bell with me, all the houses were named after famous women and I can't think of one with the surname Scott - Joan of Arc keeps coming to mind but I don't think that is right because the others were famous English women.

Alexander doesn't ring a bell either, but who knows have asked another friend who used to go to the school waiting to hear. It's very frustrating wonder why it's just that one we cannot remember.

Hello Sylvia,
Sorry got mixed up with another school i went to.
I think it could have been Marie Curie.
Carol

That doesn't ring a bell either Carol, this is so frustrating.

None of the names suggested so far for the 4th house rings a bell, wonder if it could be Barratt - Elizabeth Barratt Browning the poet - or perhaps Garratt for Elizabeth Garratt - the first woman doctor - all the others were famous English women - Madam Curie was French/Polish if I remember right.

This doesn't ring a bell either Sylvia, to be honest now I don't think anything is going to sound right - gone a bit brain dead

l hope someone comes up with a name soon.....l'm exhausting myself searching and rattleing my brains......don't ask me why but does it have anything to do dentistry...the reason l say that is we had to write an essay on " our" houses and l got into trouble for writing what i did, after all these years it still stays with me but not the house name....Brenda

Brenda, I rang Jeanne Wallin earlier as she has a very good memory, she wasn't in, so I will try again later, perhaps either she or Doreen might know.
