Birmingham market tokens

izzy eckerslike

Here we have a series of market tokens from various traders in the Birmingham wholesale markets. They were posted on a forum called Worldofcoins (the link will take you to the thread where you can view comments etc). Permission is granted to post them here. The owner would like to hear from anyone who recognises the names and perhaps worked there or has anything interesting to say regarding tokens of this type and how they were used instead of cash

Vickerstaff & Co were wholesale fishmongers in the Fish market in Bell st, and also had a stall, (sometimes several stalls run by different family members), in the market hall. They later moved to respectively the new Wholesale market and the New Bull Ring Centre. John Vickerstaff was a fishmonger back to the late 1860s, but by 1876 the business was run by Elizabeth Vickerstaff, Finally between the 1879 and 1880 directories the firm was known as John Vickerstaff and Co.
