Would he have been Roman Catholic? I think only Church of England records are available. Perhaps another member knows?

Hi Rosie - I did ask in #4 if he was a particular denomination as mainly C of E are online. I think he was baptised C of E but I suppose he might have converted. RC records are not easy as they are at St Chad's but most (last time I went) are still microfilm.
 
Yes Janice , several of "mine" have converted then married. I don't think Eric has confirmed this though. I suppose in the end it will have been mis-transcribed. I have some wonderful ones in my tree, some names have had as many as 15 different spellings, it has been hard work to prove the truth.
