I am trying to find out more of John Melvin, a Roman Catholic businessman who died in 1940 at the age of 90.
His son was Martin Melvin. He lived in Olton. Thank you

1901, St Bernards Grange Olton and John is widowed.
In 1911 they are living at St Bernards grange, Olton
In 1911 there is another son Michael joseph age 19 , in 1901 he is in Alton ,Staffs,as a boarder the address says Convent and there are many child boarders and religious sisters.I come from that area and it appears to be the now derelict Cotton college which was a training colleg for priests but had a school attached.

Thomas , son age 20 b. Ireland
John, son age 10 b. B'ham
Pat, son age 7 b. B'ham
plus 6 lodgers all born Ireland , bricklayers labourers.

by 1871 the family are in John Street, and Peter and John are both Skin dealers.

Not sure if you have his probate record?

"John Melvin of St. Bernard's Grange, Olton, Warwickshire died 7 May 1940. Probate Birmingham 12 August to Sir Martin John Melvin Baronet & Agnes Josephine Melvin Spinster. Effects £42,3412 6s 6d."

Thank you all very much for your kindness in providing this fascinating information.
He was my great grandather. I know he left school at 11 so managed to better himself in a quite dramatic way.

I can help you. Martin Melvin was my g uncle.
I knew there would be more of us Melvin’s out there. I’m technically not one but my great Nan was married to Patrick Melvin born 1884 died in Gallipoli in 1915 so my great Aunty Mary Hadley is a Melvin as are my moms cousins, they moved out to Harborne
