For info

Reply to Civic Society - I've emailed our response to the Civic Society. As suggested by Astoness, I've added in a question about funding if the full cost of a plaque cannot be raised and a question about when the funds will be needed. We now need to wait and see if Birmingham University want to be involved (and if they will match fund contributions raised by us).

Funds pledged - we've now reached a figure of £215 !!! I'm hoping we can reach the target of £400. If anyone wants to pledge funds via private message, please do so (to Vivienne14). Any pledge, whatever that might be, will bring us one step closer to the target.

Once again, I thank you all.

Viv.

Hi all. As you know we've approached the Birmingham Civic Society seeking a blue plaque in recognition of the valuable work of Phyllis Nicklin, the late photographer and staff tutor of Birmingham University. There's a thread link below on progress with this work.
https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/for...e-plaque-application.45969/page-3#post-564093

It's now time to boost those funds from other sources. The first thing I'd like your help with is identifying any businesses in Phyllis's 1960s photos which still exist today - or in fact any commercial building which still exists today. From your suggestions I shall approach the current occupants/businesses to secure their interest in our efforts to get that important blue plaque. I shall also be asking them for contributions towards its cost.

Feel free to nominate any building or business on this thread. It could include pubs, shops, industrial units or offices etc. Be great if people can add any history they know/have, in fact throw in anything you know about the building which you think will help us. The more info I have to approach the businesses the better.

In anticipation, many thanks for your help. Viv.

one that straight away springs to mind viv is H SAMUELS JEWELLERS HUNTERS ROAD...it is still in business but unfortunately i fear that many businesses that phyllis photographed will be long gone now...sorry i cant post the photo its coming up file too large but i know it is not...

lyn

Thanks Lyn that's a very good start.

Even if the businesses on Phyllis's photos have gone, if the building is still there I might be able to get the current occupants interested. You never know, it might strike a chord. I'm willing to give any suggestions a go. Same applies to businesses that have moved elsewhere or large retail chains. Viv.

trying again to post the pic of H SAMUELS

Thanks for the photo Lyn. Not drastically changed since Phyllis took her shot (top). The building must have been extended after hers, it has a long addition to the right - just out of shot in bottom Streetview.. Did anyone on here work there? Do you know if it's still occupied by H.Samuels or did they move elsewhere Lyn? Viv.

yes viv very little has changed except for the properties at the bottom of hunters road just before it turns into nursery road...they have now gone but i do have a photo of those...phyllis took this one when i was living round the corner in villa st and i have always been convinced that the person with a tripod that we saw taking a photo of myself and mates playing rounders was phyllis but to date i cant prove that..i am down that way often and as far as i know the building is still occupied by H SAMUELS but stand to be corrected on that

Update. I've been in touch with the Civic Society to check on their progress with getting Birmingham University involvement. So far they've had no response back. They've tried several approaches. BCS will give it one more go. Let's hope the University responds.

Shall come back with their response. If no response, I shall ask BCS how we might proceed. Viv.

Update
I've been in touch with the Civic Society again. The blue plaque is still under discussion. It now seems the University shall erect one of their own on University grounds. This will specifically celebrate her work at the University.

BCS have now asked if our request will be for a plaque to recognise her overall life achievements.

If you have any thoughts about this, please let me know. I shall then respond to the BCS email with our thoughts. Many thanks all. Viv.

Please could Warren/Jim check out if there are restrictions on replying to this thread? It's been reported to me that respondents might get the "insufficient privileges" message. Many thanks. Viv.

hi viv as you know there are threads in the phyllis nicklin archives section where only you and i can make a post as they are purely for updating but i cant see why members are having a problem posting on this thread..maybe they have tried posting on the threads where only you and i have posting privileges..i am pretty sure that before the new look forum took place there was a note informing members of this..

lyn

had a message from a member who cant make a post on this thread so i can only assume that when the forums format was change a while back that somehow this thread blocked members from posting...its over to warren on this one...

Yes Lyn it seems that's the problem. So could Jim/ Warren please change the settings on this thread so that members can make comments.

I'd like to respond to the Civic Society this week so grateful if insufficient permissions could be lifted. Many thanks.

Thank you to those who have responded via my Inbox/ message system. I have noted these and will take account of your comments in my response to BCS. So no need to repost here when restrictions are lifted.

Be grateful Lyn if you could pass to me any comments you've received which members would like noted. Thanks. Viv.

This is the latest development from the Birmingham Civic Society. Any comments very welcome before I respond back to BCS. Thanks. Viv.

hi viv although this forum is mainly interested in the wonderful photography that phyllis gave us and quite righty should be recognised for it i am happy to go along with a blue plaque for her overall life achievements...the main thing is that she gets one:)

I battled with the Civic Society for a plaque to be put up for Marie Longmore and her husband, Frederick Humphreys, at the site of their home in Wheeley's Road, Edgbaston. She was a well known Victorian actress and singer, her home theatre being the old Theatre Royal. He was the musical director at the same theatre for forty years. The response I got back was that they weren't well known enough, but I have well over 300 newspaper reviews and Marie performed all over the USA as well as the Haymarket Theatre in London.

A friend of mine, who was the producer of many shows for the BBC, said "I bet if you put the cash up front, the plaque would miraculously appear the following day!". Cynical maybe, but I've never heard of many of the people named on existing plaques either.

Here now, thanks folks.

My thoughts are that Phyllis Nicklin left a remarkable legacy in her photographic collection that recorded the social housing and working conditions of everyday people. While she was employed by the university, her photographic collection has become a direct benefit not only to the student who were taught by Phyllis, but to the community as a whole.

Her collection has engaged the whole community in a way that has increased our knowledge, and given us a new insight into the past lives, the living and working conditions of other generations. It has made history accessible to everyone and therefore the benefits her short and almost invisible life have bought, are in my opinion, immeasurable and priceless.

Her life should therefore be recognised and appreciated.

Personally, I think that her contribution to the history of the area is far greater than that to the institution that employed her, though obviously that was also important. The university did not even consider her as important enough for recognition till her achievements were promoted by others.

Hi all. I've just sent off a reply to the Civic Society email in post #76. It's taken me longer than I'd hoped due to family commitments but it's now sent. Hopefully I've reflected the views of members. Once again thanks for all your help.

Morturn has very helpfully suggested we pursue a grant with the Council. He's going to do this for us. Many thanks Mort for doing that. Viv.

Hi all. I’ve chased this up a few times and have today sent another reminder. The situation seems to be that the Civic Society feel they have a full commitment to plaques. But I was told that Birmingham University might still be proceeding. This was back in April. So I have followed this up with my contact at the Civic Society to see if we can find out any more.

Viv.

Maybe those responsible for these plaques should bear in mind that the rest of the world can see the work of Phyllis Nicklin via the internet. Most others memorials are of people and places that have gone and can no longer be seen, or are limited to those living in the area. The Nicklin archives give everyone (who has access to a form of computer) a chance to see the past - and in a few cases - the present of the City of Birmingham.

I’ve just received an email from the Civic Society saying they are making contact with the University to discuss erecting a plaque for Phyllis Nicklin. I’ve no firm indication yet as to whether the University will agree to take this forward, but watch this space. It looks to me that the CS will suggest to the University that they use the occasion of her death (50 years this year) to do so.

Could I ask that a member confirms for me the exact date of her birth and the exact date of her death please ? This is just to double check the details we already have in the Phyllis Nicklin family thread.

As I say, watch this space. And many thanks all. Viv.
