Depending on where in Edgbaston, you have different options for the closest park. Cannon Hill is at one corner, Calthorpe is closer to town, there's a lot of parkland by the reservoir... You're not likely to find out unless there's something enduring and specific to go on. There's no guarantee that it was a local park either.

Yes I agree, but we have sussed out that it is possibly Highgate Park. Thanks

Franny I think you would be hard put to find a sizable area of level ground in Highate Park as shown behind the bench where the gentleman is seated, as the whole park is on a hill.

Hi fanny
Did this nice gentleman ever live in Oliver road as i have seen a simular gentleman
On another forum, if not what part of edgbaston did he live in or a name of a road he lived in would be helpful
Abit of a clue to tag this man would be helpful as to what part of edgbaston
But to be honest it could be any part of birmingham even out of the area from where he lived
May be he was taken out by family for a sunday afternoon
Look foreward to hearing from you soon may be,if any clue of the area he lived in
Is a great help to pin it down
Best wishes Alan,, Astonian,,,,

Actually, he and his family had a Newsagents shop at 211 Moseley Road. His name is Edward Cook Gibbs.
I was getting confused with another family member, also an old man with a white moustache who did live in Edgbaston!

Hi Franny
I have been looking at a couple of old history books with photographs and the listing of parks
With abit of information with them below the picture
And i am calulating the property of the end of mosely road as the postionof tnere business
This dear old gentelman looks abit of a swarf well mannord and well dressed person
And to me the white gloves tells me some think of a man of character
As some one brought to our attention on the forum that they see a slope in the ground
Down hill appearence in the land, i also noticed this postion and the gentleman is sitting on a bench
With the wide open space going down hill
And as l look at it ,thinking of all the parks i have visited in my life from a childhood days
I was brought up in Aston, andspent most of my growing up in aston park
And that scene comes to mind from the walk from aston hall front pathe
To the general public walk way you would be facing a down ward pathe to the main gates
Which went down the hill but the benches was placed on the main walk way
It would have been the first or second bench along the main walk way
In my book of top ten parks number 1 listed is yes inded Aston park
Which it states that Queen Victoria openened Aston Hall and Park,
The Press noted all classes of people watched with absorbing intrest
So my conclousion is that given that there was a high royalty person in attendance
And wearing his white gloves for the occasion and that thedownwards of the land
Which was a sort of view i goy when a little kid sums it forme and this gentleman was At Aston park.
Secondly my other choice wluld have been calthorpe park
As it was the very first park in 1857 there was a reception in the town hall
And a procession to the park with a twenty one gun salute
And close to moseley road it was an easy access from mosely road to them both
Best wishes Alan,, Astonian,,,,,,,

Thanks for that Alan. That's all a bit early for him though, as he started at the shop in 1901 and died in 1929. Photo must have been mid-late twenties. We reckon the white gloves belonged to the photographer as there is a camera case with them. I have a second picture taken at the same time, and one taken with a relative's car roughly around the same date.

Hi franny just skimming over and over on this one when you say mosely road and he lookes like a man of charm and character
and a man of means if my memory serves me correctly along the mosely road heading towards the village
IT Would be a 60 yards along from the fghting cocks pub on the opersite side facing the pubs side there was a comunetity hall i think may be today its a market hall now and before you would get to dixons estate agents of todays premises as i used to work for them doing there repossesions around the area there was a small drive which you would walk down into and then you wold see some high cast iron railings with a padlock on it and the sign on the gates would state this is a private park only for the usage of the local
residents now that goes down a hill when you have gone through the gates and some one around there was a key holder to the specialist residence but these people would have had there own key especialy in those years and dates so i recon thats where it was only village residence was for there use only none residence within the area could not access it not to the general public there was some other writing stating such but i cannot recall the whole inscriptions it stated but it was not a public park even today best wishes Alan,, Astonian,,,
