Yardley cemetery

I am off to Yardley Cemetery tomorrow in search of my great-great-grandparents :) (I just did a drive-by at about 6pm, was shocked that it was all locked up as the cemeteries where I'm from are generally always open)

A very kind person at Yardley told me where the bodies were interred and the grave no - obviously there may be no headstone but how do I know which grave is which

I know its Section 40 and the grave is 42106 but the section is massive - is it a case of just wandering around aimlessly for 5 hours trying to find it?

Hi Joanna,

There is an office, not far from the entrance gates, if they are open, ask in there, otherwise look out for a member of staff. And they will be able to give you directions to the row. They open at 10.00 a.m. I think on a Saturday.

Ann

I have a map of Yardley Cemetery and section 40 is the fourth block on the right when using the Clay Lane entrance. First path on the right divides section 37 from 38, second path is between section 38 & 39, turn into the third path and the begining of section 40 is on your left. I have found that the grave numbering at Yardley is easy to follow - not like Handsworth! If I were more technical I would show you the map, but scans and things are beyond me! Happy hunting and please say 'hello' to my Gt Grandparents and Grandmother in section 50.

hi joana
if you go to the office they will give you a map and the plot numbers
and if they are not to busy one of them will take you around to the plot
or they will tell you which path to go down from the office its quite a walk
my grand parents are burried down by clay lane gates
think there was two gates in clay lane mine are the bottom gates
my grand parents were ernest jelf and victoria hinton she died in the 50.s
he died in the year 70. but the gentle man in the office looked it up
for me and gave me a plan with there plot numbers on and walked
down with me they are very helpful people
best wishes astonian ;;;;

Thanks, they sent me a plan of the cemetery on email so I know where 40 is, it's the actual grave numbering is beyond me.

I'll second that Astonian. I've also found the staff at Yardley very helpful.

Ann

When you get to the area section 40 you will see the grave numbers usually at the foot of the grave. It is not difficult to follow the numbers. Good Luck!:)

Joanna,

If, because of it being the weekend, the office is closed, drive down to the crem, and you'll find staff down there. I have found them very helpful in the past. So you should be fine. Good luck.

Ann

There are roads in the cemetery you can park at the side of them. My husbands parents and gran are there so we visit often. Not all the graves have numbers but you can usually work them out.:)

Thanks for all your posts. I'm planning to go there from Dorset in two weeks time to find the Hood family. My dad died before I was born and I can only remember seeing his grave once, so will need to find it again. Now having got into genealogy I have a number of Hoods to look for. Wish me luck.

Hello,

I have just seen this post about Yardley Cemetery & have just found out that my Grt Grandmother Jane Hannah Smith was buried there on 2nd January 1943. I was sent the grave number - 64234 & the section number - 46 by a lady in the Cemetery office.

I was wondering if anyone lives near there & would be willing to have a look if they could find the grave......I dont know if it would have a head stone or not but would love to be able to see where she was buried. I live in South Wales & I know I will never be in Yardley to look for myself.
Hope its ok to ask this,
Thank you
Jan

Thank you so much for that, I hope it wont be too hard to find !! I dont expect there to be a head stone, but at least I could see where Jane Hannah is buried.

I feel quite sad that she is buried there all alone......the email I received from the cemetery said that the grave was purchased for 3 burials but only Jane Hannah was buried in it......dont know who else was in mind for the grave at the time.......her husband Frederick was buried in Trealaw Cemetery in the Rhondda, South Wales in 1936.

I know some of her children lived in the Birmingham area & died in the late 1970s/1980s (havent found out when yet) but maybe not the same area as Jane H died.

Anyway that would be brilliant if you could find where she is buried at least.

Thank you
Jan

Hi janparf, if you go to my profile I have posted an album called Yardley Cemetery and in it are 3 views of Section 46.
My Great Grandparents are buried there in an unmarked grave.
I have not worked out yet how to put photos in these posts so the album is the easiest way for me to show you.
If I get chance to go to the cemetery I will have a look for you

Hi Lindyloo,
Just had a quick look at your pictures, so I can get a feel of where she is buried, I dont expect her to have a headstone to be honest, but maybe I will be able to see where her grave is !!

Thank you
Jan

Hi Jan,
Its not far from me, so I will go as soon as I get chance, although the way things are at the moment Sparkhill Boy may just get there before me and he has further to come !!!

Any time, that would be brilliant, thanks so much, cant wait to see if one of you can find her grave, I wouldnt imagine that it is very well looked after as there is no family left living there, but still, would be nice to know where she is buried!!!

Jan

After reading Jennyann's post (5) I emailed Yardley with what info I had regarding my Father's death also details of my maternal Grandparents and a very nice lady emailed me back with the numbers and sections. I am so thrilled.

I, like others, will never be able to visit their graves or sadly take a photo. So could I beg, if someone is going to be there, would they be so kind enough to take a photo for me please?

I never knew my Father as he died 2 months before I was born.

Thank you for your time and a special thanks to Jennyann for posting the email address of Yardley.

Hi Rowan,

If you let me have the details, I will gladly go up to the cemetery and take the photos for you.
Just please be aware that a lot of the graves have been damaged, and a lot of stones are missing.

Ann

Hi janparf,
I have just got back from the cemetery, I found the plot where your Jane is buried, but as you suspected there is no headstone and there are no other markings at all. fortunately it was easy to work out which one it was because other graves either side have their numbers intact. I will add the photos to the album now.

Rowan, had I seen your post earlier I would have looked for yours too, but Im sure Ann B will find it for you

Lynne

Thank you Lynne,

Would be good to see where she is anyway, as i said, I didnt expect there to be a head stone, but never mind.

I wish I lived near to go & visit the grave, as I feel sad that there is no one left to look after the grave. Im still wondering why the grave was purchased for 3 people & only Jane Hannah was buried there alone ??

Thank you so much again, will keep an eye out for the photo,
Best wishes
Jan

Hi Lynne,

Thank you so much for that, just had a look at the pictures, such a shame there is no one to look after the grave any more.

Will print that off if that is ok with you, and put it with my family history.

Thanks you again,
Jan

Hi Jan,
Glad I was able to find what you needed and of course you are welcome to print off the pictures,... it gave me the opportunity to say a few words to my own family members that rest there.
Lynne

With the help of the Ladies in the Yardley Cemetery office, I managed to find my Grandparents grave yesterday,
I was surprised to find there was a headstone, still intact, my Grandfather was buried in 1912 and my Grandmother in 1949,
We are going to try and clean it up, most of the inscription is still readable.

Nick

Nick I am so pleased you have found your families grave and headstone. Just a word of warning be careful what you clean it with as household detergents can damage the material as its quite old. You can purchase a special cleaner for memorials, Bettetware do one, you may also find some on the net. Please don't use products like Cillit Bang these will do more damage than time.:)
